Citizen Science: Saving the Past

Organiser: Heritage Office Galway County Council and the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, NUI Galway.

Workshop 1

Hosting & Tagging Images Online & Data Analytics using FLICKR

The BEO (Irish for ‘alive’) Online Local Heritage Archive Library is a repository of photographs, films and audio recordings that reflect the social, economic, educational, religious and cultural life in Galway and Ireland in days gone.
As the project relies on volunteers from local communities across Ireland to collect and to provide the data on the heritage material gathered, this is a fantastic and important example of Citizen Science in action.
Data Analytics is a key purpose of the BEO project as we are using data scientific methods such as tagging to extract knowledge and insights from the material collected, to transform unwritten content often contained within photographs and videos into meaningful information to enrich the nation’s heritage for both local communities and society generally.

Time/Data: November 19th, 10am-12pm

Stór ar líne de ghrianghraif, scannáin agus taifid fuaime is ea Cartlann Dhigiteach Oidhreachta Áitiúla ar Líne BEO a thugann léiriú ar an saol sóisialta, eacnamaíochta, oideachais, reiligiúnach agus cultúir i nGaillimh agus in Éirinn fadó.
Mar go bhfuil an togra seo ag brath ar oibrithe deonacha ar fud na hÉireann sonraí a bhailiú agus sonraí ar ábhar oidhreachta atá bailithe a chur ar fáil, is sampla iontach agus tábhachtach atá anseo d’Eolaíocht an tSaoránaigh i mbun feidhme.
Is aidhm thábhachtach de thogra BEO í an Anailísíocht Sonraí mar go bhfuilimid ag baint úsáid as modhanna eolaíochta mar clibeáil chun eolas agus léargais a bhaint as an ábhar a bhailítear chun ábhar nach bhfuil soiléir i ngrianghraif agus i bhfíseáin a aistriú chun eolas fiúntach a bhaint astu chun oidhreacht an náisiúin a neartú ar mhaithe le pobail áitiúla agus an tsochaí go ginearálta araon.

Workshop 2

Photo Retouching and Colour Manipulation using GIMP

This workshop will look at how to use a free and open-source graphics editor software known as GIMP (General Image Manipulation Program) to alter, enhance and colour photographs as part of the BEO Digital Local Heritage Archives project.

GIMP has many powerful features such as combining different images into one image; eliminating marks on objects, on clothing or on a person’s skin; in separating specific elements such as a particular individual from the rest of a photograph and providing the authentic colour to people, objects or landscapes.

It offers a wide range of file types including JPEG, TIFF and PNG and is available for the  Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems.

Time/Data: November 24th, 10am-12pm

Requirements: Computer/tablet, Internet connectivity, Zoom
