Whizzkids Training the Technologists of the Future

One of the highlight shows of the 2017 Galway Science and Technology Festival will be WhizzKids Training who has been involved with the Festival for four years. We asked Garry Lowe, Founder of Whizzkids Training a few questions about their technology workshops.

All events at the GSTF are free. School events can be booked here and online booking for free tickets to events and shows at the Festival Exhibition Sunday 26th November will open on Saturday 18th November at www.galwayscience.eventbrite.ie

Tell us a bit about yourself – where you are from and your business/organisation

Whizzkids Training has been in operation since 2003 when we ran our first tech summer camps at the University of Limerick. We started in UL because that is where I graduated from, but very quickly expanded to UCD, DCU, UCC & NUIG. Now we run camps in 11 third level campuses around the country. Soon after we started the summer camps, we started running after-school clubs and since then we have added a range of in-school programmes.

We run a lot of Transition Year workshops, but have huge interest from the primary school sector as well. We have full time teachers based in Dublin, Cork, Limerick & Galway and run courses in over 80 schools every year.

With a wide range of Technology workshops, from coding and game development, to 3D Digital Design and App Design, we are happy to customise our workshops to suit the needs and interests of students. We find that HTML/CSS is the most popular workshop. The students love to see a real website emerge from this page of code and it demystifies some of the preconceived ideas about coding.

When are they taking place and where?

We will be bringing the workshops to a number of schools around Galway during the Festival. We try to make things as easy as possible for the schools that we work with, so apart from excellent instructors, we provide a full suite of laptops loaded with fully licenced software and all other necessary equipment, so all we need the school to provide is a regular classroom and we will take it from there.

Who are they suitable for?

We believe that there is something in technology for everyone and we have designed age appropriate workshops for students from 8 up to 18 years of age. Our teachers are very experienced so can handle every scenario from beginners to advanced and groups of mixed ability.

Why is Galway Science and Technology Festival important to you?

We have been running Summer Camps, workshops and In-School Programmes all around Ireland since 2003 and it has been great to see the growth in interest in STEM subjects in that time. Galway Science & Technology Festival has played a big part in making students enthusiastic about the subject. It is such a well run festival with a great line-up of events. It gets bigger and bigger every year. Long may it last!
